Zipcar no longer has carshares in the North End
There was a time when Zipcar had at least six carshare locations in the North End - each with multiple cars. With the removal of the last two spots on Commercial Street at Hanover last week, it is now zero. Zipcar has also removed the nearby Lovejoy Wharf carshares. Two carshares remain on the perimiter of the neighborhood on Cross Street.
According to the City of Boston's data, Zipcars are used, on average, for seven hours per day compared to just one hour per day for privately owned vehicles. Zipcars serve 23 households per vehicle.
The City believes supporting wider availability and awareness of car sharing as an alternative to personal vehicles will decrease individual car ownership, reduce the number of vehicle, miles traveled, make more curb space available for a range of uses, and reduce the City’s rate of carbon emissions.
Independent studies have shown that access to carshare services:
- Reduce the total number of cars on the road.
- Reduce private car ownership.
- Save households money.
- Free up parking spaces in city's where private vehicle storage is allowed on public streets (like Boston).

I've emailed both the city and Zipcar about this, and am getting unclear information about whether or not the spots will return. Do we know if this is permanent?
I'm glad I'm not the only one worried about this. We do not own a car and have relied on ZipCar for years to fill the gaps between transit/cycling/walking.
If ZipCars continues to dry up to the point that it isn't a viable option, we will be pressed into buying a car or moving. I really don't want to buy a car.
Supposedly some of these cars are returning. ZipCar is blaming the snow for their absence. It hasn't snow significantly for weeks, and now the snow is totally gone. Where are the cars?
