Patrick Mendoza released from prison - time served

You may see a familiar face wandering the North End - just not on Hanover Street between Cross and Parmenter. Pat Mendoza has been released from prison roughly 18 months after he fired several rounds at acquaintance Rocco Giovanello on a busy Hanover Street in front of Modern Pastry back in July 2023.

Mr. Mendoza spent the following week on the run before turning himself in to police from a treatment facility on the Cape.

He was held until April 2024 at which time he was released on bail with restrictions which included wearing a GPS bracelet.

Five weeks later, Mendoza was re-arrested after cutting off his ankle bracelet. He was quoted as saying he was sick of it and was going to kill someone.

In July of 2024, Mendoza pleaded guilty to four felonies:

A fifth charge - a misdemeanor possession of ammunition charge - was dismissed.

At that time, Judge Christopher P. Belezos sentenced Mendoza to 2 1/2 years at the Suffolk County House of Correction with 18 months of that sentence to be served. The judge also credited Mendoza with the 334 days he had already spent behind bars (it's not clear if the ~five weeks Mendoza was out on bail before cutting of his GPS bracelet and being arrested counted toward this credit).

Which brings us up to now.

Mr. Mendoza has three years of probation, but will be eligible to terminate that probation after two years. The conditions of his probation include:

  1. Mental Health Evaluation at Massachusetts General Hospital.
  2. Attend in-patient mental health treatment if recommended. If not recommended, attended out-patient mental health treatment one time per week at discretion of Doctor and Probation Department.
  3. Sign all releases regarding treatment.
  4. Take all required medications.
  5. Stay away from Hanover Street between Parmenter and Cross.
  6. Stay away, no contact direct or indirect with the victim.
